IAC Newsletter – May/June 2006

(International Advisory Council for Homosexual Men & Women in AA)

IAC Logo: IAC Newsletter – May/June 2006

The May/June 2006 IAC Newsletter offers a heartfelt message from Deputy Chair Stan L., updates on the new IAC website, a financial report, and a request for members to share the histories of their local LGBTQ+ AA groups and roundups. This issue reflects the deeply personal, grassroots nature of IAC’s work during the mid-2000s.

The newsletter opens by welcoming the new IAC webmaster, Mark J., who rebuilt the IAC website at www.iac-aa.org. The committee extends gratitude to outgoing webmaster Marty S., now an Advisor, and Treasurer Kevin S. for recruiting Mark and making the new site possible.

Stan shares openly about his own transition—from a hospital executive to a school teacher—which delayed the newsletter and inspired a renewed focus on making the monthly updates more engaging for members.

🌈 Sharing Group Histories: A Call to the Fellowship

Stan invites members to send in the histories of their LGBTQ+ AA groups:

  • How meetings started

  • Challenges faced

  • How they grew

  • Why they succeeded or eventually closed

To model this, Stan tells his own story:

  • Living closeted on Hilton Head Island, SC

  • Discovering IAC at a YPAA conference

  • Driving weekly to Charleston for LGBTQ+ meetings

  • Becoming active in a small Hilton Head meeting that fluctuated from 1–15 attendees

  • Facing stigma in local AA due to his sexuality

  • Moving to Texas, attempting to start a new group, and faithfully serving as an IAC representative despite low turnout

His message emphasizes persistence, courage, and trust in a Higher Power.
