IAC Newsletter – November 2008

The November 2008 IAC Newsletter provides extensive information about the upcoming 2010 International AA Convention in San Antonio, along with major updates on LGBTQ+ AA meeting directories, volunteer opportunities, and historical highlights from across the fellowship.


This issue opens with a full overview of the 2010 International Convention (July 1–4, 2010), including:

  • Theme: “A Vision for You”

  • Main meetings at the Alamodome

  • LGBTQ-related workshops

  • Local hotel and convention center venues

  • Registration and housing information (available August 2009)

  • Updates via AA.org, Box 4-5-9, and the IAC website


The newsletter explains how the convention housing lottery works, why lodging cannot be booked early, and what attendees can expect in terms of travel, transportation, and hotel placement.


📚 Understanding Box 4-5-9

A helpful section explains Box 4-5-9, AA’s official service newsletter, published every two months and mailed to every GSR in the U.S. and Canada. Instructions are provided for individuals or groups who want to subscribe.


🗂 IAC Meeting Directory & Online Updates

Recognizing the growth of LGBTQ+ AA worldwide, IAC emphasizes the need for accurate and updated group information:

  • Over 1,800 gay/lesbian AA meetings in the U.S.

  • More than 60 international cities hosting LGBTQ+ meetings

  • About 40 LGBTQ+ roundups each year across North America


The meeting directory is undergoing revision and will be available both online and in printed booklet form. Groups are encouraged to submit updated information directly through www.iac-aa.org using the self-service system.

🎨 Call for Button Designs

IAC invites AAs to submit designs for a special 2010 Convention button, welcoming both artists and amateurs. Designs must include the IAC name or initials.


📜 “Did You Know?” – LGBTQ+ AA History

This issue includes a rich historical section with important moments from AA and LGBTQ+ AA history, including:

  • The first informal gay hospitality suite (1975 International in Denver)

  • Early milestones at the 1980 New Orleans International

  • International LGBTQ+ AA and service facts (Russia, AAamigosAA, San Quentin beginnings)

  • Early LGBTQ+ figures such as Marty M. and Priscilla P.

A Q&A segment explains how IAC and AA work together during International Conventions, including:

  • Workshop selection

  • Hospitality suite responsibilities

  • Dance event logistics

  • How costs, volunteers, and planning roles are shared


🌎 Convention Future Sites

AA announces:

🍇 AA Grapevine Spotlight

A helpful section describes Grapevine’s history, its role as a “meeting in print,” and the long tradition of publishing stories from gay and lesbian alcoholics.
