The May 2010 IAC Newsletter is an extensive, information-packed guide to the 2010 International AA Convention in San Antonio—including schedules, LGBTQ-focused workshops, volunteer opportunities, and full details for the IAC Hospitality Suite and Dance. This issue served as the primary roadmap for LGBTQ+ AA members attending the convention that summer.

The newsletter opens with the general convention timeline, highlighting key moments for lesbian and gay attendees, including:

🌟 Key LGBTQ+ Convention Events

  • IAC Hospitality Suite (Westin Riverwalk Hotel – Hidalgo Ballroom)Open Thursday through Sunday morning with coffee, meetings, quiet conversation space, fellowship, and air conditioning.

  • Gratitude Meeting – Thursday, July 1

  • Lesbians/Gays in AA Workshops on Friday and Saturday

  • IAC Dance – Friday, July 2 (10 PM – 2 AM) at La Villita Featuring dancing, social areas, patio seating, and a theatrical program called “The Joy of Living: The History of Gay People in AA” by The Not Ready for Sobriety Players.

The newsletter offers a complete breakdown of hospitality suite activities, including early-bird coffee, breakout rooms, meeting boards, badge decorating, information tables, temporary sponsors, local restaurant guides, archives display, AA event listings, and interactive maps for members to mark their home groups.

🧡 Volunteer Opportunities

IAC coordinated a massive volunteer effort for:

  • The Hospitality Suite (greeters, set-up, archives, temp sponsors, quiet room attendants)

  • The IAC Dance (set-up, host team, greeters, translation help, first-aid team, break-down team)

A special call for volunteers asks members to join teams, sign up as captains, bring their talents, and support LGBTQ+ AA members during the weekend.

🌍 Who’s Coming?

The IAC reports seeing LGBTQ+ convention attendance from:

  • More than 20 U.S. states

  • Canada

  • Mexico

  • Japan

  • South Africa

  • Scotland

A truly international gathering.

💻 Website Recovery Update

A major part of this issue is a deeply honest report on the multi-year struggle to restore the IAC website, which had been:

  • Broken

  • Hijacked

  • Unusable for long periods

  • Painfully slow to repair

The committee shares lessons learned, gratitude for member patience, and a renewed plan for:

  • A functional LGBTQ+ AA meeting database

  • Roundup listings

  • Faster updates

  • Direct email communication

A new website was officially “on the way."

📬 IAC Representatives & Contact Info

The newsletter includes a full listing of regional reps, open service positions, and a call for new reps in more than 25 U.S. states and Canadian provinces.

A Treasurer’s Report notes:

  • Balance as of March 31, 2010: $18,772.14

  • Restricted convention funds included within that total.

Finally, the issue encourages members to support the AA Grapevine, contribute stories, and stay connected through the temporary NING network.
