IAC Newsletter – March 2006

(International Advisory Council for Homosexual Men & Women in AA)

IAC Logo: IAC Newsletter – March 2006

The March 2006 IAC Newsletter is a deeply personal and emotionally powerful update from Deputy Chair Stan L., highlighting IAC’s role in supporting LGBTQ+ alcoholics around the world—especially those who are isolated, incarcerated, or struggling to access meetings safely.

The issue opens with gratitude for member contributions and a financial update from the Treasurer: Current balance (March 9, 2006): $6,881.40

💔 A Letter from a Gay Incarcerated Alcoholic Seeking Help

The centerpiece of this newsletter is a heartbreaking, urgent letter from Tod F., an incarcerated gay alcoholic in Massachusetts. In his message, Tod describes:

  • Being excluded from AA, NA, and 12-Step programs inside the prison

  • Harassment, violence, and “ownership” by inmate bullies

  • A group of 25–40 LGBTQ+ prisoners wanting AA meetings but denied access

  • His efforts to petition the prison superintendent and state corrections commissioner

  • A plea for help, resources, and guidance to start an LGBTQ+ AA meeting behind the walls

Stan encourages IAC members to write to Tod, send literature, and consider creating contact relationships to support the LGBTQ+ population in this facility. Stan has begun corresponding with him personally and reports receiving a detailed, disturbing follow-up letter describing violence toward LGBTQ+ prisoners.

🌎 Member Correspondence & Updates

Two additional letters illustrate the reach of IAC service:

  • James M., Treasurer of Live & Let Live Group (Birmingham, AL)Requests updated contact information and inclusion on the mailing list.

  • A humorous community submission titled “AA Bullshit Bingo” A lighthearted parody about typical AA meeting clichés, submitted by a member for fun.

🙏 Closing Message

Stan concludes with a heartfelt call to service, emphasizing the importance of compassion, connection, and carrying the message—especially to those most cut off from the fellowship.
