IAC Newsletter – January 2006

(International Advisory Council for Homosexual Men & Women in AA)

IAC Logo: IAC Newsletter – January 2006

The January 2006 IAC Newsletter offers a heartfelt snapshot of international LGBTQ+ AA connections, historical insight, community letters, and inspirational service messages. Though short, this issue captures the spirit of outreach and unity that defined the early IAC years.

The newsletter opens with an announcement that IAC is seeking a new tape/CD librarian, inviting volunteers to reach out through the IAC website.

A major feature of this issue is an extraordinary historical contribution:

🌍 “The History of AA in Copenhagen’s Gay & Lesbian Group”

Written by Peter M., IAC’s Denmark Representative, this detailed account traces the formation of Denmark’s LGBTQ+ AA community:

  • The group began after a 1984 Gay Island camp, where a discussion on “Gay and Alcohol” sparked interest.

  • Early meetings were private, informal gatherings held in members’ homes.

  • The group later found a home at Ryesgade 107, meeting alongside other AA groups and earning deep respect for their active participation.

  • A hostile priest forced them to move in 1988—but the new venue in Enghave Church not only welcomed them, but saw LGBTQ+ AA as a vital outreach ministry.

  • By the early 1990s, multiple LGBTQ+-focused AA groups were meeting in Copenhagen, including a men’s group that continues to thrive.

  • The primary group remains strong today, with 15–20 home group members and a legacy built on identification, openness, and perseverance.

Peter’s follow-up note emphasizes Denmark’s small population (5 million) and the ongoing growth of AA in his country.

💬 Letters from Members Worldwide

This issue also includes personal correspondence from AA members reaching out to IAC:

  • Jeff P. – Oklahoma, USA Shares feelings of isolation as a gay alcoholic in a military town, asks about the friendliness of LGBTQ+ roundups, and offers to help however he can.

  • Alexander – St. Petersburg, Russia Requests updated information about Gay AA groups in Russia, after outdated listings led to a wrong phone number.

These letters underscore IAC’s role as a vital international link connecting LGBTQ+ AA members to meetings, roundups, and each other.
