The Winter 2019 newsletter brings together service updates, powerful personal stories, and early preparations for the 2020 International Convention in Detroit. This issue reflects the spirit of unity, responsibility, and support that defines GaL-AA’s work in the LGBTQ+ AA community.

The newsletter opens with a heartfelt 2020 Detroit Committee Update from Heidi M., who shares her experience attending past International Conventions and her gratitude for serving as Treasurer for the Detroit Host Committee. The update reflects on AA’s Responsibility Statement, the history of past conventions, and the importance of ensuring that the hand of AA is always available to those seeking help.

This issue also announces a major fundraiser planned at the historic Motown Mansion, owned by Alan S. Brown. The event will feature a brunch, tours, and community gathering to support GaL-AA’s hospitality programming at the 2020 Convention.

The 2019 Election Results follow, confirming that all open Executive Committee positions—Chair, Treasurer, Advisor I, and Advisor III—were filled by returning incumbents. With only one service résumé received for each position, elections were not required under GaL-AA’s bylaws. Members are encouraged to consider future participation and explore appointed service roles.

A deeply moving and personal recovery story, “They’re Here / My Cancer’s Back” by Matt M., is featured prominently. In this intimate reflection, Matt shares his cancer recurrence, his relationship with sobriety, the gifts of sponsorship, and his lifelong commitment to “passing it on.” The newsletter includes an editor’s note acknowledging with sadness that Matt passed away shortly before this issue went to print, honoring his legacy and sending love to his partner Wade.

The issue also includes group and individual contributions from September through December 2018, Executive Committee listings, and a full calendar of upcoming LGBTQ+ AA roundups across the U.S. and Canada.
