GaL-AA Newsletter – Spring/Summer 2021
(January – July 2021)

The Spring/Summer 2021 newsletter reflects a pivotal moment in GaL-AA as the LGBTQ+ AA community navigates the continuing effects of the COVID-19 pandemic while adapting to new ways of connecting, serving, and supporting one another.
The issue opens with “Sober, We Made It Through,” marking more than a year of global lockdowns and celebrating the resilience and creativity that helped AA members stay connected through virtual meetings, online events, and new service opportunities.
This edition includes updates on the GaL-AA Executive Committee, announcing newly filled positions:
• Chairperson – Mark J. (Georgia)
• Treasurer – Jim A. (California)
• Advisor III – Steve K. (Ohio)
• Advisor II – Gary C. (Michigan) (completing an unexpired term)
Members are also invited to step into appointed service roles—including Newsletter support, Roundup Liaison positions, and website assistance—as GaL-AA continues expanding communications and outreach during a time of rapid change.
The issue features several heartfelt reflections from members about sobriety during the pandemic:
• From Steve K. (Columbus, OH) — on the importance of accessible LGBTQ+ AA resources, the rise of online meetings, and the hope that digital spaces remain part of AA’s future.
• From Gary C. (Royal Oak, MI) — a moving share about adjusting to new protocols, navigating fear and isolation, and relying on prayer, meditation, and virtual fellowship to stay sober.
• From Mark P. (Beverly, MA) — insights into spiritual awakenings, long-term recovery, and adapting to an AA landscape transformed by technology, service commitments, and virtual meetings.
This edition also includes a message from Chairperson Mark J., reflecting on the challenges and unexpected gifts of 2020–2021, the growth of virtual AA worldwide, and the vital responsibility of ensuring LGBTQ+ AA spaces remain available to anyone seeking help.
Additional highlights include:
• An announcement of the AA Preamble change, replacing “men and women” with “people.”
• A list of upcoming LGBTQ+ AA roundups across the U.S. and Canada.
• Financial contributions for January–June 2021.
• A call for newsletter contributors and community-generated fundraiser ideas for future International Convention hospitality.
