GaL-AA Newsletter – Spring 2022
(May 2022)

The Spring 2022 newsletter introduces newly filled Executive Committee positions and invites members to participate in service beyond elected roles. Alongside key updates, this issue includes practical AA tools, personal stories, and a creative look at recovery slogans.
The newsletter opens with A New Year and a New Beginning, announcing the 2022 GaL-AA Executive Committee lineup and inviting volunteers to help with newsletter work, website support, and roundup liaison roles. Members are encouraged to step into service and stay connected through the updated mailing list.
A major feature of this edition is The Slogans, where Gary C. shares his experience with classic AA phrases—how they frustrated him early on but later became essential spiritual tools. He discusses the impact of simple reminders such as “If Nothing Changes, Nothing Changes,” “H.O.W.,” and “This Too Shall Pass,” while offering a curated list of more than twenty slogans that can spark meeting topics or support daily sobriety.
This issue also highlights two newly seated Advisors:• Advisor II — Misha Q. (Iowa City, IA), who shares her story of getting sober in 1996 and her commitment to ensuring the hand of AA is always available to LGBTQ+ alcoholics.• Advisor I — Jeff T. (Cleveland, OH), whose long-standing service history includes Intergroup committees, retreats, and LGBTQ+ community organizations.
The Members' Stories section features a powerful recovery narrative:• “My Life and AA” – by Julie M.Julie reflects on getting sober young, struggling with trauma, relapse, abusive relationships, and ultimately returning to AA after a decade of pain. Her story spans early recovery, spiritual awakening, and the profound impact of LGBTQ+ AA meetings in Michigan that helped her rebuild her life.
Another thoughtful contribution, A Member’s Journey Through Steps 2 and 3, shares one individual’s experience overcoming religious fear, building a personal relationship with a Higher Power, and finding serenity through willingness, daily prayer, and forgiveness.
The newsletter also includes contributions from October 2021 – April 2022, a full list of committee members, the Twelve Steps, and a roundup calendar featuring LGBTQ+ AA events across the U.S. and Canada.
