GaL-AA Newsletter – Spring 2018
(April – May – June 2018)

The Spring 2018 newsletter is filled with energy and momentum as preparations continue for the 2020 International AA Convention in Detroit. This edition highlights committee updates, face-to-face meeting news, Seventh Tradition guidance, personal stories, and opportunities for LGBTQ+ AA members to get involved.
The issue opens with a warm 2020 Detroit International Convention Committee Introduction from Megan M., who shares her excitement as Convention Chair and invites members from across the country to join in service and pre-convention fundraising. The theme “Love and Tolerance Is Our Code” sets the tone for GaL-AA’s vision for 2020.
A detailed recap of the GaL-AA committee’s face-to-face meeting in Detroit gives readers a behind-the-scenes look at hotel tours, planning discussions, and early coordination with local volunteers. Committee members visited Detroit’s Marriott Renaissance Center, Westin Book Cadillac, Crowne Plaza, and other potential host sites. They also enjoyed local history, including the famous American vs. Lafayette Coney Island rivalry and a ride on the city’s People Mover.
The committee met with the new Detroit host team, including chairs for Hospitality and Entertainment, and received experience from past Atlanta 2015 leaders.
A major feature of this issue is a thoughtful article on Contributing to GaL-AA, explaining how Seventh Tradition funds are used to support essential services such as:
Maintaining the GaL-AA website
Operating hospitality suites at AA International Conventions
Distributing LGBTQ+ AA literature
Sponsoring roundup attendees with financial need
Managing meeting and roundup databases
Providing communication tools and service infrastructure
The article reinforces GaL-AA’s commitment to self-support, transparency, and unity across special composition groups.
This edition’s Personal Story—“Angel on Interstate 81 North” by Sherry L.—is a powerful testimony of overcoming trauma, embracing sobriety, coming out in recovery, and finding hope through a moving encounter with strangers following a devastating cancer diagnosis.
Additional sections include Dec 2017–Feb 2018 contributions, Sober & Out updates, the Steps and Traditions for the quarter (4–6), and a comprehensive calendar of upcoming LGBTQ+ AA roundups in the U.S. and Canada.
