GaL-AA Newsletter 2023 3rd Quarter
(July – August – September 2023)

The Summer 2023 newsletter reflects a vibrant season of activity, service, and spiritual growth within GaL-AA. Chairperson Hilde M. opens the issue with a warm welcome and updates on Vancouver International Convention planning, early fundraising efforts, and a renewed focus on building a current nationwide LGBTQ+ AA group list to improve connection and outreach.
This edition includes an insightful Step article:• Step 7 – by Brian P. (Visalia, CA) — Brian shares a deeply honest reflection on humility, surrender, and discovering that character defects cannot be removed by self-will. Through his Fourth Step work, he finds the willingness to let go of old beliefs and trust a Higher Power to remove what stands in the way of usefulness to others. His story highlights how accepting help and practicing quiet willingness lead to profound spiritual growth.
A major feature of this issue is GaL-AA’s Financial Management and Safeguards, a transparent overview of how contributions are handled, protected, and allocated. The Executive Committee explains prudent reserve policies, seed money for International Convention hospitality, and how expenses such as insurance, website hosting, incorporation, literature, and convention activity fees are responsibly managed. The report emphasizes accountability, clarity, and self-support under Tradition 7.
This issue’s Member Story section features Accepting the Differences AND the Similarities by James R. of Atlanta. In this powerful multi-page reflection, he shares early experiences in the gay bar scene of the 1970s, the progression of his drinking, meeting his sponsor, and the spiritual awakening that began on February 27, 1980. James describes his journey from feeling different and disconnected to finding belonging, service, and community through Atlanta’s early LGBT+ AA meetings. His story highlights the growth of LGBTQ+ AA history, roundups, and community service over decades.
The newsletter also includes contribution listings for January–June 2023 and a list of upcoming roundups across the U.S. and Canada.
