GaL-AA Newsletter 2023 2nd Quarter
(April – May – June 2023)

The Spring 2023 newsletter marks a fresh chapter for GaL-AA, beginning with a warm welcome from newly elected Chairperson Hilde M. She shares her gratitude for 43 years of sobriety, her long service history, and her excitement about leading GaL-AA as preparations begin for the 2025 International Convention in Vancouver. Hilde also encourages groups across the country to join the GaL-AA directory and support the work of connecting LGBTQ+ AA members worldwide.
This issue includes a powerful Traditions article:• Traditions 4–5–6 in Action – by Jeff Y. (Cleveland, OH)Jeff provides thoughtful, practical insight into autonomy, primary purpose, and avoiding outside issues. His reflections connect the early challenges in AA history with modern group life, exploring how these Traditions guide decisions, protect unity, and help members stay grounded in spiritual purpose.
Two Roundup Highlights are featured in this edition:• Southeastern Massachusetts Roundup (SEMRU) — Mark P. shares a joyful recap of workshops, talent shows, speaker meetings, and GaL-AA’s ongoing presence at this long-running event.• Together We Can – Detroit Roundup 2023 — Gary C. recounts a lively return to in-person fellowship with inspiring speakers, fun trivia, strong participation, and a look back at the roundup’s roots dating to 1982.
This issue’s Member Story is a major highlight:• “Never Had a Legal Drink” – by Joe R. (Los Osos, CA)Joe chronicles his powerful journey from drinking in early adolescence through dangerous blackouts, homelessness, and hopelessness—then into the life-saving experience of AA, sponsorship, service, and spiritual awakening. His story spans trauma, healing, loss, and meaningful service to others, showing how recovery transforms lives at any age.
The newsletter also includes contributions from October 2022–March 2023 and a comprehensive list of upcoming LGBTQ+ AA roundups throughout the U.S. and Canada.
